Love comes from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. No one can claim to know God while refusing to love. John teaches us three things about love and how to respond to it.
First, love comes from God. It is not a feeling people invented but God's very essence, and everyone who loves has been born of Him and knows Him. Loving someone who doesn't deserve it draws us deeper into knowing God.
Second, God showed that love clearly by sending His Son. Not because anyone deserved it, but while still sinners, God confirmed His love by giving His one and only Son as an atoning sacrifice. Once this love is known, it can no longer be taken for granted.
Third, those who have received this love are obligated to love one another. No one has ever seen God, but when we love one another, the invisible God becomes visible through us. The world is rarely moved by argument, but it cannot argue with love.
The love we've received leaves us with a debt to repay by loving one another. May we be witnesses of love whose lives lead the world to know God, in Jesus' name.
