1 John 4:1-6, "Those Who Belong to God," builds on chapter 3's question "Are you really a child of God?" and asks further: "How can we know who really belongs to God in this world?" Since the real and the fake exist side by side, we need to learn to discern between them.
First, those who belong to God rightly confess Jesus Christ. Some in the early church taught Jesus only appeared human rather than truly coming in the flesh, but John says confessing Christ came in the flesh is the first mark of belonging to God. Many still accept Jesus only as a good teacher, not as the Savior who died and rose for our sins. A right confession does not stop at knowledge it changes our lives.
Second, they do not fear the world. Though false spirits are at work, the One in us is greater than the one in the world. Like Elisha's servant in 2 Kings 6, when our spiritual eyes open, we see how great the God who surrounds us truly is.
Finally, they listen to God's Word and obey it. The world speaks what the world wants to hear, but those who belong to God listen closely to His Word like sheep who know their shepherd's voice, growing familiar with it by staying close.
The real and the fake are hard to tell apart by appearance, but the fruit always shows over time. May we prove our faith with our lives, not only words the kind of children of God whose lives make the world say, "That person truly belongs to God," in Jesus' name.
